Ever wondered how to remove the “uncategorized” category in WordPress? If you don’t use it, it is very annoying and can take up unnecessary (if not critical) space in your navigation. Luckily, it is quite simple to remove it if you know the process… in fact, you just might smack your forehead (like I did) when you realize how obvious it is.

Step 1: Change the Default Category for Posts

a) Log in to WordPress and in the left-hand menu go to “Settings > Writing”

b) Scroll down the resulting page and change the “Default Post Category” from “Uncategorized” to another category.

c) At the bottom of the page press “Save Changes”

Step 2: Delete the Uncategorized Category

a) In the left-hand menu go to “Posts > Categories”

b) On the resulting page, scroll over the “Uncategorized” category and you will see 3 options appear including “Delete”.

c) Delete the category

Voila! You are done and you now no longer need to be inconvenienced by the “Uncategorized” category.

I hope that helps… and you didn’t leave a mark on your forehead

Before we installed the SEO Slugs for WordPress Plug-in the URL created by this post title looked like this:

http://www.wordpressseo.ca/blog/an-example-of-how-the-seo-slug-plugin-can-help-your-posts/

If you look at that URL you will see that this URL is pretty long and although it is readable it could be far more concise.

With the SEO Slug plugin installed the slug is radically more concise:

http://www.wordpressseo.ca/blog/seo-slug-plugin-posts/

Perhaps, however, you want to makea change to the slug… will it hold? Yes! As soon as you make any edit to the slug the SEO Slug Plugin will no longer intervene. If you wish to go back to letting SEO Slug handle your URL slug then just edit the slug and delete what you have there and save. Voila! The plugin will take over once more.
