Step 2b) Modifying the More Text

Back to Step 2 or Skip to Step 3) Other WordPress SEO Plugins

A view of a post snippet without having the More Text changedOf the many incredibly cool SEO configurations available in HeadSpace there is one that really stands out; look at the screenshot to the right. (we had to revert to the old out-of-the-box theme to demo this). As I am sure you noticed, thanks to my none to subtle (nor straight) highlighting, the “More Text” is shown here as:

“Read the rest of this entry »”

Consider now that as a general SEO rule it is important that the text used to link to a page in your website should have some relevance in it and you may understand why “Read the rest of this entry »” is far from preferable.

6-4 HeadSpace - Page ModulesAs a result, we need to enable a function within the “Page Modules” section of HeadSpace 2 called “More Text”. In the image with the green background to the right you will see the basic page modules that are enabled by default in HeadSpace; Page Title, Page Description and Tags.

Immediately below active page modules there is a long list of disabled modules that offer a mind-boggling number of SEO options. In this case, however, we are focusing on the “More Text” module so let’s stay on track here… yes I am talking to myself ;-)

Now the Active Page Modules has the More Text Added as an optionIn order to enable the More Text module it is as simple as dragging and dropping the module from the disabled listing straight to the active listing above.

I suggest adding it at the bottom of the page options because it is definitely an enhancement you won’t always need to do; unlike the Title Tag and Meta Description Tag.

So what will it look like when you modify the “More Text” on the initial example we showed above? And what should we use for a replacement?

The Old: “Read the rest of this entry »”

The New: “WordPressSEO.ca Intro Continued »”

This is the HeadSpace module that shows up on every post page. Just add the new more text you want in the field at the bottom and update the post - VOILA!

Here is how it looks LIVE after implementation:

This is a screenshot of the Post after changing the More Text to read "WordPressSEO.ca Intro Continued"

THAT is a much more relevant link to use to point to the full-breadth of this article!

In Step 3 I will outline additional plugins like the SEO Slugs Plugin that will help with optimization.

  1. Hi Ross, attended your workshop at WordCamp and thought it was great! I’m having trouble with step 2b however, because I’m not exactly sure HOW to make the change you’re suggesting. IE, what do I do with the new text I want to replace the old “read the rest of this entry” with?

Sorry, I’m dense when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks again for all the info!

    Hi Garfield,

Thanks for the kind note about the presentation. It was a lot of fun! I heard your question loud and clear and added some additional clarity on the subject on the tutorial; you make the more text changes on the actual post. It is located in the module below the content area where HeadSpace 2 is. Here is the link to the more-text page again so you can just jump there: http://www.wordpressseo.ca/step-2-headspace/step-2b-more-text/

All the best and please pass the word on the site. I am excited to be helping people out :-)

So how do you override the existing ones already there to do it globally?

  4. rossdunn says:

Hi SEOWolf, that is an excellent question! I looked around but I can’t find that setting anywhere… odd isn’t it?! The next time I suggest a round of updates for Headspace I will be sure to pass this suggestion along. Cheers!
